President's
Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW)
The President's Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) was established
February 7, 1976 as an advisory body to the President on issues related
to Emory University women. For nearly three decades, the PCSW has been
a vital organization at Emory, illuminating fundamental concerns and inspiring
significant accomplishments.
The PCSW has raised awareness of and initiated action on many issues benefiting
Emory University employees. The PCSW's major 2004-05 accomplishments
include:
- Creating the Sexual Assault Education committee and several
ongoing and planned initiatives aimed at educating undergraduates about
the incidence of rape on college campuses nationwide;
- Increasing access to lactation facilities on campus; a new university-wide
policy was approved in summer 2005; To read the policy, visit this link.
- Completing analyses of faculty salaries by gender in the School of
Medicine and an AAU study of women in leadership;
- Sending letters to six search committees advocating a diverse pool
of candidates with respect to gender;
- Securing funding to send two women to leadership training programs
and implementing a process for nominations and selection;
- Holding open forums to reach out to the Emory community, to engage
in more collaborative dialogue with other commissions, and to share
insights with senior leadership;
- Hosting the first Women in Leadership at Emory dinner;
- Providing funding for Women's History Month and a speaker/event promoted
by UNIFEM, a student run women's organization, which is seeking charter
status; and
- Promoting the PCSW to the Emory community, which resulted in
double the number of applications to the commission and a four-fold
increase in the number of writing award nominations.
The Center for Women and PCSW have been working together since the Center
was established in 1992.
