Social Media and Public Scholarship

How do social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and the "blogosphere" help scholars make an impact with their work beyond the academy? How might social media challenge the work of scholars? In this session, three scholars with experience and expertise in using and examining social media as a platform for public scholarship will discuss those opportunities and issues.
Presenters: Bonna Wescoat, professor of art history and blogger on her field research in classical Greek art and architecture, including "The Parthenon Project" at blogs.emory.edu/parthenonproject; Roopika Risam, doctoral candidate in the Department of English, an active participant in Twitter discussions and debates on subjects at the intersection of the academy and the public realm, and involved in national discussions about Twitter and academe; and Shannan Palma, PhD alumna of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, staff member in the Center for Women at Emory, expert in social media engagement for thought leadership.

Claire Sterk, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs; Michael Leo Owens, Associate Professor of Political Science; and Pamela Scully, Professor and Chair of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, will discuss some of the challenges within academe in the pursuit of public scholarship and some strategies for addressing those challenges, as well as ideas for how university culture might more readily embrace such work as intellectual and professional capital. This event is open to all faculty and graduate students.

Co-sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and the Center for Women at Emory as the second in a series of three follow-up sessions to the January Op-Ed Workshop, which aims to increase the volume of women faculty voices in the public sphere. Three Emory faculty members—Drew Westen, Professor of Psychology; Deborah Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies and Hank Klibanoff, James M. Cox, Jr., Professor of Journalism and Pulitzer Prize winner—will share their experiences and advice as op-ed contributors in major national media outlets. Two op-ed page editors from major newspapers, Autumn Brewington from the Washington Post (via teleconference) and Tom Sabulis from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, will discuss what they seek in pitch, tone, scope, style, and other aspects of an op-ed for their papers.
