Steen Miles, Emmy-award winning journalist, was Emory Women's Center keynote speaker for the 4th Unsung Heroine Awards Ceremony, which took place February 13, 2001 at the Miller Ward Alumni House. Ms. Miles is the recipient of numerous civic citations and journalism awards and is recognized as a pioneer among African Americans in the field of broadcast journalism.

Ms. Miles began her career in her hometown of South Bend, Indiana, where she was the first African-American female television reporter. Since then, she has received three Emmys and four Emmy nominations, as well as other journalism awards including United Press, Associated Press, Association of Black Journalists and the Gannett Corporation.

In addition to the above noted accomplishments, Ms. Miles has twice been among a selected group of journalists invited to the White House. She was an 11 Alive/YWCA "Woman of Achievement" and is an inductee into the ranks of the nation's "Outstanding Young Women of America." Chicago-based Dollars and Sense magazine named her as one of its top 100 Black Business and Professional Women in the country. Atlanta's Women Looking Ahead magazine has named her one of the top 100 women in Metro Atlanta and also honored her as one of its "Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things."

Steen Miles retired in 1999 from WXIA-TV (11 Alive) in Atlanta after a 30-year career in Broadcasting. She is currently President and CEO of SMCI, a full-service media consulting company. She continues to contribute to the Atlanta community by serving on various boards for organizations throughout the city.
