Women's History Month at Emory, March 2002
Women Talking and Acting: Fierce, Fearless, and Wise

In March every year, the Emory Women's Center sponsors a wide-ranging celebration of Women's History Month. Attracting nationally recognized keynote speakers such as the Boston Women's Health Collective, Michael Kimmel, Naomi Wolf, Rebecca Walker, Faye Wattleton, Lani Guinier, Wilma Mankiller, Natalie Angier, Carol Moseley Braun, Rachel Simmons, and Helen Thomas.

Women's History Month events at Emory open a window onto women's cultural, intellectual and social lives.

Keynote Speaker:The first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, now U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, Carol Moseley Braun, is this year’s keynote speaker for Women’s History Month.

A native of Chicago, Ambassador Moseley Braun graduated from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1969 and earned her JD from the University of Chicago in 1972. After working in several Chicago law firms, she became an assistant United States Attorney. After four years in that position, she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives where she became the first female assistant majority leader. In 1988 Ambassador Moseley Braun successfully ran for the office of Cook County recorder of deeds, making her the first African-American to hold an elected executive position in Cook County government.

Her challenge of Senator Alan Dixon of Illinois in 1991 stemmed largely from her belief that his decision to confirm Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court after being accused of sexual harassment by a female co-worker demonstrated that he was out of touch with his female constituents. Fortunately for the country, Carol Moseley Braun won that election, becoming the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992. Along with Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, she became the first woman to serve on the influential Senate Judiciary Committee.

Carol Moseley Braun was named U.S. Amabassador to New Zealand in 1999.
