Women's
History Month at Emory - March 2005
Daring to Do Things Differently
In March every year, the Center for Women sponsors a wide-ranging celebration
of Women's History Month, attracting nationally recognized keynote speakers
such as the Boston Women's Health Collective, Michael Kimmel, Naomi Wolf,
Rebecca Walker, Faye Wattleton, Lani Guinier, Wilma Mankiller, Natalie
Angier, Carol Moseley Braun, Rachel Simmons and Helen Thomas.
Women's History Month events at Emory open a window onto women's cultural,
intellectual and social lives. The full month's calendar
follows below.
Keynote
Speaker: Dr. Julianne Malveaux will deliver
the 2005 keynote address for Emory’s observance of Women’s
History Month and the Jessica Glasser Memorial Lecture. She’ll present
“Making Room for Sadie – A Diversity Metaphor.” The
title refers to Dr. Sadie T.M. Alexander, a champion for civil and human
rights, who was born at the turn of the century and became the first black
woman to earn a PhD in the United States. Quite remarkably, she was also
the first black woman to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania’s
Law School and gain admission to the Pennsylvania Bar.
Julianne Malveaux earned her PhD in economics (Alexander’s field)
from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980. She later taught at
the University of San Francisco and University of California—Berkeley.
Her research focuses on the labor market, public policy and the impact
of policy on women and people of color. A writer and columnist in numerous
national publications, and a sought-after guest on national television,
she has had tremendous influence on public opinion of race, culture, and
gender issues.
Her most recent books are the coauthored (with Deborah Perry) Unfinished
Business: A Democrat and a Republican Take On the 10 Most Important Issues
Women Face (2002) and the coedited (with Reginna A. Green, foreword
by Cornel West) The Paradox of Loyalty: An African American Response
to the War on Terrorism, which was released in paperback in October
2004.
Join us on Wednesday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Tull Auditorium
of Emory Law School for an evening with Julianne Malveaux. A book signing
and reception will follow in the Hunter Atrium.
