Women's History Month at Emory, March 1999
Women Creating Freedoms

In March every year, the Emory Women's Center sponsors a wide-ranging celebration of Women's History Month. Attracting nationally recognized keynote speakers such as the Boston Women's Health Collective, Michael Kimmel, Naomi Wolf, Rebecca Walker, Faye Wattleton, Lani Guinier, Wilma Mankiller, Natalie Angier, Carol Moseley Braun, Rachel Simmons, and Helen Thomas.

Women's History Month events at Emory open a window onto women's cultural, intellectual and social lives.

Keynote Speaker: Eloquent and passionate Lani Guinier, the first black woman tenured professor at Harvard Law School, was keynote speaker for Women's History Month 1999. Ms. Guinier came to public attention in 1993 when President Clinton nominated her to be the first black woman to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice and then withdrew her name without a confirmation hearing. The experience prompted her to write the latest of three books, Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice. The book has been hailed as a powerful work of scholarship and a thought-provoking memoir.

Ms. Guinier, who was denied an opportunity to speak for herself during the nomination conflict, created COMMONPLACE, a national nonprofit center to connect citizens, communities, and ideas, and RACETALKS, a project to create opportunities for multiracial problem solving and collaboration. She has also focused a great deal of study on how women are educated and has argued that new models of education for women must be found. She is the author of The Tyranny of the Majority (1994) and coauthor of Becoming Gentlemen: Women, Law School and Institutional Change (1997).

Lani Guinier spoke in Tull Auditorium of Emory School of Law on March 2, 1999 at 7:45 p.m. A reception and booksigning followed in the Agnor Room.
